Crep Protect vs Kiwi – What’s The Better Shoe Protector?

Shoes cost a ridiculous amount of money these days. So it’s only natural to want to protect your investment with a good stain and water repellent. But with so many of these kinds of products on the market, it can be very hard to make the right choice.

Usually, it’s a process of trial and error – you buy one shoe protector, take it home, see if it works and if it doesn’t, it’s on to the next one. And so on and so on until you find one that actually works for your shoes.

But today you get a break because we tested a couple popular shoe protector products and will be sharing our findings in the following comparison review.

Crep Protect Vs Kiwi Overview

Kiwi is probably a name you know and are familiar with while Crepe is a fresh, young and relatively new upstart from the UK. Both make spray-on protector products for sneakers but Kiwi makes a much wider range of products for all kinds of outdoor gear.

Kiwi has also been around for a lot longer than Crep Protect. Kiwi gears their products more towards camping and outdoor enthusiasts whereas Crep Protect focuses mainly on sneakers. However, Crep Protect does offer an actual cleaning service – if you live in London.

What Do the Products Do?

Both Crep Protect and Kiwi shoe protectors are spray-on products. The application for both is very easy and the purpose for both products is to repel water from your shoes and prevent stains from setting.

Key Differences Between Crep Protect and Kiwi Shoe Protector

After testing both of these products we must say that it was difficult to tell the difference between them – at first. However, if we can impress one thing upon the consumer right now it’s this: Kiwi shoe protector works for more kinds of shoes.

Crep Protect is mainly for sneakers made from leather, suede, canvas and nubuck. Kiwi can be used on full grain leather, faux leather, synthetic materials and even mesh.

Crep Protect Review

Selling Points:

  • Made specifically for sneakers
  • Fast dry time
  • Lasts for 2 weeks

According to the company, Crep Protect is suitable for canvas, nubuck, leather and suede. All you have to do is hold the can about 6 inches away from the shoes and spray on a coat.

After testing Crep Protect on a few different pairs of shoes, we were impressed both with how fast it dries and how well it protects against water. Water just sort of slicks off of the shoes when Crep Protect is applied. However,  heavy stains like wine and oil-based stains still seemed to set into the material a bit.

We would say that Crep Protect is a good product for anyone who lives in wet and rainy climates – this is where you will get the most value from this product.

Kiwi Review

Selling Points:

  • Keeps shoes breathable
  • Protects against salt
  • Works on many materials

Kiwi shoe protector first struck us as simply another outdoor product. However, we were  impressed when we read how many materials it was supposed to work on. We tested Kiwi on some hiking boots and sneakers.

Like Crep Protect, Kiwi repels water for both boots and sneakers very well. It also kept dirt and mud from settling and staining the boots. Our only gripe was the smell. Kiwi has a distinct smell when you apply it so we recommend doing so in an open, ventilated area.

It does take an hour or two to completely dry as well. Other than that though Kiwi actually provided great water repellency and superior stain protection. This would be a good product whether you stick to the city or like to hike/camp.

Which Offers Better Protection Overall?

We would have to say Kiwi. It protects from rain and water just as well as Crep Protect but the stain protection is better.

Who Should Buy Each?

If you don’t plan to do any hiking or outdoor activities, you can get away with just Crep Protect. But for muddy terrain, we recommend Kiwi.

Which Company is Better Overall?

Kiwi has stood the test of time so we’re inclined to give this one to them too. While Crep may well prove to be a worthy brand, it’s still too early to tell.
