Fabsil Vs Fabsil Gold – What’s the Better Option?

Fabsil has been a fabric protector staple in the United Kingdom since 1963. They produce essential products for outdoor enthusiasts but a lot of consumers have trouble choosing between Fabsil products.

While Fabsil doesn’t boast the most extensive line of fabric protector products, many of the protectants they do make have very similar functions. So it can actually be a bit difficult choosing between their products.

But fear not, because in the following brand review, we will be taking a look at a couple of Fabsil product lines to help you decide which is the better option for your needs.

Fabsil Overview

Fabsil is the base line of products made by the company. It can be used on a wide variety of fabrics and objects.

The basic Fabsil products are essentially less concentrated than Fabsil Gold products. They will be for your lighter outdoor needs; but they can be put to all the same applications as the Fabsil Gold line.

Fabsil Gold Overview

Fabsil Gold features an enhanced, super-concentrated formula that promises the highest level of water protection.

The Fabsil Gold line of fabric protection products is not very extensive; but they may be used for a wide variety of applications. Of course, both Fabsil and Fabsil Gold products are made by the same company.

What’s the Difference Between Fabsil and Fabsil Gold?

The main difference is the formula.

Both Fabsil and Fabsil Gold products are made by the same company. But the Fabsil Gold line features a more concentrated and powerful formula. Fabsil Gold spray products also come in smaller cans.

  • Available in 400 or 600 ml cans
  • Spray-on application
  • Repels water

We were amazed at how versatile this spray was. You can use Fabsil Universal Protector for outdoor furniture, tents, boots, clothing and even cars. It does take a while to dry but it offers really comprehensive, long-lasting protection for most fabrics.

You can even use Fabsil Universal Protector for sheepskin, suede and leather. It also offers a moderate degree of stain protection.

Fabsil Universal Protector UV

Selling Points:

  • Paint-on application
  • Protects against UV damage
  • Comes in large quantities

You can get this paint-on protectant in 1, 2.5 or 5-liter cans. We found that Fabsil Universal Protector UV was much more handy when you want to restore the waterproof properties of larger items like tarps, truck bed covers and multi-person tents.

It can also be used on cars, outdoor furniture, clothing and footwear but it will also extend the life of your outdoor fabrics that get battered by the sun.

Fabsil Gold Products

Fabsil Gold Universal Protector

Selling Points:

  • Guaranteed ultimate protection
  • Colorless and odorless coat
  • Suitable for all fabrics

Fabsil claims that Fabsil Gold Universal Protector spray-on is suitable for all fabrics. And we have to say that from our testing, this claim seems to hold up. It wicks water off of tarp, canvas, leather, nubuck, waxed cotton, nylon, synthetic fabrics and even down jackets.

It only comes in a 200ml can but that might be all you need for your apparel items. Again, it takes a while to dry but the waterproofing is worth it.

Fabsil Gold Universal Protector (Paint-On)

Selling Points:

  • Colorless and odorless
  • Large supply
  • Paint on application

Like the Fabsil Gold Universal Protector spray version, the paint-on version is suitable for all kinds of fabrics. It comes in either a 1 or 5 liter canister so it’s better for larger items like tarps and large tents. It is a bit harder to apply because you have to wipe it on as opposed to spraying it on.

But it provides the same high-performance protection against water. It can also be used on canvas, nylon and synthetic fabrics.

What is the Difference Between Fabsil and Fabsil Gold?

The only major difference is that Fabsil has a more concentrated formula therefore, the spray version of Fabsil Gold comes in a smaller can.

Who Has the Better Product Range?

If you need stronger protection for smaller garments and pieces of outdoor gear, we would recommend Fabsil Gold. For extra UV protection and gear that doesn’t need extreme waterproofing, Fabsil works well.

Which Brand Has the Safer Products

Fabsil and Fabsil Gold are made by the same company so their products are equally safe.

Did Fabsil Get Discontinued?

No, there are no reports that any Fabsil products have been discontinued.

Is Fabsil Gold Toxic?

Studies have found that excessive and long-term exposure to Fabsil Gold products may dry or irritate the skin. However, Fabsil is a silicone-based water repellent product that is non-toxic and safe when used as directed.

Which is the Best Product?

It’s important to note that Fabsil Gold products have a 5 times higher concentration of active ingredients than standard Fabsil products. However, Fabsil Gold products do not contain any UV inhibitors.

So if you need UV protection, standard Fabsil Universal Protector UV would be the best choice. But if your gear is often exposed to severe rain and excessive moisture, Fabsil Gold would be the better choice.

Final Assessment

As you can see from our testing and overall rating, the final assessment is a draw.

The base water protection performance of Fabsil products doesn’t quite match that of Fabsil Gold products. On the other hand, Fabsil Gold products don’t contain any UV inhibitors so they can’t protect fabrics from sun damage.

In the end, the better option will depend on the elements that you and your gear are most exposed to.
