The Best Electric Zero Turn Lawn Mowers of 2022

There is a popular misconception  that electric lawn mowers are underpowered. While that may have been true five years ago, that certainly isn’t the case these days.

If you are tired of dealing with oil changes, cans of gas or worse yet, pull cords, then it’s time to start considering an electric lawn mower.

Electric lawn mowers now come in zero turn versions so you can get around tight corners very easily. Compared to gas mowers, electric lawn mowers require very little maintenance.

You don’t have to keep refill cans of gas handy, you don’t have to bother with oil changes and on top of all that, electric mowers are better for the environment.

The only caveat is that you have to make sure your backup batteries are charged.

With that all being said, you do have to practice some discretion when buying an electric mower. Let’s take a look at some important considerations…

Are Electric Mowers Good for All Terrain?

The great thing about electric mowers is that they operate almost exactly the same as gas mowers.

As far as the type of grass you have, it won’t matter which you use: electric or gas-powered.

Electric mowers can cut all the same types of grass and turf as gas-powered mowers. And just like some gas-powered mowers, there are electric mowers you can get that perform particularly well on hilly terrain.

What’s more important than the type of terrain you have is the size of the terrain. Keep in mind that there are some electric mowers that can only run for about an hour at a time on a full battery charge.

For most properties, an hour is plenty of time; but for multi-acre properties, an hour can be rather limiting.

How Long Do Electric Mowers Last?

The mower itself can last as long as 10 years with proper maintenance.

What you may have to replace before the 10-year mark is the battery. You may have to replace the batter after about 5 years.

However, replacing the battery is a lot less expensive than replacing the entire mower. To compare, the average gas-powered lawn mower will also last about 10 years and possibly longer if you maintain, store and care for it very well – this includes regular oil changes.

Pros & Cons of Electric Mowers

Pros:

  • They’re better for the environment
  • They typically run quieter than comparable gas mowers
  • They tend to be lighter making them easier to maneuver
  • Electric mowers also tend to be less expensive than gas mowers
  • They don’t require the level of maintenance that gas-powered mowers do

Cons:

  • Electric mowers tend to have less torque than gas-powered mowers
  • You have to make sure you get an electric mower with a runtime that suits the size of your property
  • You also have to make sure that your batteries are all charged up before you start mowing
  • Battery charging times can vary greatly

What Are We Looking For In A Quality Electric Zero Turn Mower?

First and foremost, you are going to want to look at the runtime of any electric zero turn mower you are thinking of buying.

Think about how long it takes you to mow your lawn and then compare that with the rated runtime of the mower in question.

Secondly, if your mowing area contains hills and inclines, you are going to want to go with a mower that has a good amount of torque. This will make it easier to get up and down these inclines.

If you have large, open expanses of lawn to mow, you are going to want to get an electric mower that has a wide cleaning deck – somewhere around 40” or wider.

Finally, you need to look at the horsepower output of the mower.

For most residential applications, somewhere around 24hp should be enough. However, if you have more than about 2.5 acres or you plan to put your electric mower towards commercial use, you may need more horsepower.

Now that we’ve covered the basics of electric zero turn lawn mowers, let’s get into the fun stuff: highlighting the best ones currently on the market!

#1 – PRO 60V 42″ CrossoverZ Zero Turn Lawn Mower

Selling Points:

  • Brushless motor
  • Automatically detects grass length
  • Integrated cargo bed

This is a riding electric zero turn lawn mower with some incredibly modern features. First of all it can detect the height of the turf you are cutting and adjust the deck accordingly.

The deck can also be manually adjusted between 1.5 and 4.5 inches so you get a lot of options in terms of cutting height. This mower also comes with an integrated bed so you can actually haul mulch around your property kind of like a tractor.

The brushless motor also generates enough torque to get up 15 degree inclines and puts out 24 horsepower. That’s good enough to reach a max forward speed of 8mph and a max reverse speed of 3mph.

This electric mower would be good for lawns up to about 2 acres. It comes with 6 rechargeable batteries and three rapid charging ports. The battery can run for about an hour and a half on a full charge.

Like most mowers in this class, the Pro 60V has a dual blade cutting deck which produces very clean, uniform cuts. The seat was also nice and comfortable with good lower back support.

This is a great mid-size mower that comes at a good price too (just under $5000). While we wouldn’t recommend it for commercial use on any day of the week, it should be more than enough for residential use.

Pros:

  • It has charging ports for your phone and other devices
  • Powerful LED headlights
  • Great for mulching

Cons:

  • Only 2 blade speeds

Overall Score: 96/100

The great thing about the Gravely  PRO-TURN EV mower is that it comes in various models to meet the needs of lawns of all sizes. It comes with a 48” 52” or 60” cutting deck.

All of the models top out at 5.5mph and feature constant drive spindles. The spindles serve to absorb the shock from debris like sticks and rocks. This makes this mower very durable and easily serviceable overall.

It comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and would be a good choice if you have anywhere from 4 to 6 acres to mow at a time. The Gravely  PRO-TURN EV also features lap bar steering that is very intuitive and easy to use.

The lap bar steering also makes it very easy to get around corners and to get up good and tight against edges. The Gravely  PRO-TURN EV also features a side discharge chute. This mower provided a very smooth vibration-free ride as well so it was very comfortable overall.

The Toro Z Master Revolution 48″ is ideal for commercial use. This is a seriously powerful mower that can run for 7 hours or more at a time. You can even connect it with your smartphone to get real-time battery usage and performance stats.

The Toro Z Master Revolution 48″ reaches speeds of 12 mph (forward) and has a cutting width of 48”. This is a side discharge riding mower that whips around tight corners like a dream via two front 360 degree swiveling tires.

The cutting height can be adjusted between 1.5” and 5.5” so you get a lot of versatility. This would be great for huge properties of 6+ acres. We also really liked that you can adjust the cutting height with a foot pedal.

  • 10 cutting heights

This mower has 4 independent brushless motors to provide plenty of power and a ton of options. You can add up to 6 batteries to give this mower a runtime long enough to tackle about 4 acres.

We really liked this mower because it gives you a lot of variety. Plus, if you already have EGO batteries, you can use them in this mower. The cutting heights can be adjusted into 10 positions ranging from 1.5” to 4.5 inches.

This is a side discharge mower with a cutting width of 42”. This would be a great mower for pretty much any lean because the power and runtime can be adjusted at will. There are even 3 driving modes: control, standard and sport.

#5 – Ryobi 54″ 115 AH Zero Turn Electric Riding Lawn Mower

Selling Points:

  • 5 brushless motors
  • 12-position height adjustment
  • 54” cutting width

What we really liked about this mower is that it runs really quietly. When the blades aren’t running, this thing hums along almost silently so there’s no ear protection required. You can get a bit over 3 hours of runtime on a full charge.

Of course that will vary depending on the toughness of the turf but 3 hours seemed to be the average. This mower has a max forward speed of 7 mph and a cutting width of 54”.

This is a great mower for anyone who wants to get done with their mowing in about half the time as normal. This is a side discharge mower that is very easy to control and get the hang of.

Our only gripe was that it slipped a little when going up inclines. We would say that if you intend to use this mower on properties with hills of 15 degrees pitch or more, you should upgrade the tires.

Overall though, we were impressed with how powerful this mower was. Even on really tall knee-high grass, it cut quickly and cleanly. The cutting height can also be adjusted between 1.5” and 4.5”.

Pros:

  • Runs quietly
  • Powerful and efficient cutting
  • Has drink holders and storage compartment

Cons:

  • It doesn’t perform great on steep hills

Overall Score: 96/100

#6 – Cub Cadet ZT1 42E

Selling Points:

  • Max speed of 6 mph
  • Tubular steel frame
  • 4 brushless motors

The Cub Cadet ZT1 42E would be a great choice for anyone who needs a heavy-duty mower that will last season after season. The steel tubular frame makes the Cub Cadet ZT1 42E incredibly durable but doesn’t make it too heavy.

In fact, you can mow about 2 acres on a single charge. One thing we really liked about this mower is that we didn’t notice a drop off in power after the 1.5 hour mark – and this was while we were cutting down some tall, stubborn weeds too.

The battery performance was great and it only took about 4 hours to charge. However, we wouldn’t recommend it for properties that are larger than about 2.5 acres – especially if you have a lot of hard turf to cut down.

While you don’t get any power drop-off for a long time, once you do the difference is pretty stark. This is a side discharge riding mower with a very smooth turn radius that makes it easy to get into and out of tight spots.

Pros:

  • Great for rugged terrain
  • Very durable
  • Wide cutting width

Cons:

  • Not great for properties over 2.5 acres

Overall Score: 95/100

#7 – Dr Power Electric Zero Turn Lawn Mower

Selling Points:

  • Up to 3 batteries can be used at once
  • Anti-scalp wheels
  • Cutting height can be adjusted between 1.5” and 5.25”

Dr Power may not be a brand name you are familiar with but if you want commercial-strength cutting, you should check out Dr Power Electric Zero Turn Lawn Mowers. You get the option of a 60” cutting deck or a 48” cutting deck.

Obviously if you have a large property then you’ll want the 60” version but all other features are the same: side discharge, touchscreen controls, anti-scalp wheels (4) and an intuitive suspension system that adjusts to your height and weight.

What we really liked about this mower was the touchscreen display and controls. The touchscreen allows you to easily adjust the height of the cutting deck, switch between drive modes and shows you how much battery power is left.

The Dr Power Electric Zero Turn Lawn Mowers also feature lap bar steering which is very easy to get the hang of even if you’ve never used a riding mower before. It glides around corners very smoothly and the seat is very comfortable – making it a great choice for anyone who has to sit and mow for multiple hours.

We would say that the Dr Power Electric Zero Turn Lawn Mower would be good for properties as big as about 3.5 acres. That’s because even with all 3 batteries in tow, you only get about 2 hours of runtime.

Pros:

  • It’s very easy to control and adjust
  • Very easy to use even for beginners
  • Fully welded discharge chute

Cons:

  • Max runtime is only about 2 hours

Overall Rating: 94/100

#8 – Ariens Zenith E

Selling Points:

  • Side discharge mower
  • Minimum of 5 hours runtime (on a full charge)
  • 60 inch cutting deck

The  Ariens ZENITH E has a great runtime and very efficient power use. The minimum runtime is 5 hours on a full charge. That’s because the Ariens ZENITH E uses the battery power in an innovative way.

It will only draw power on the battery with full power until it reaches the charge of the other batteries. The Ariens ZENITH E also features a brushless drive system that makes for a very smooth ride and puts less stress on the gearbox.

So this mower should last for quite a long time so long as you use it and store it properly. The cutting deck is 60 inches and is made of 10-gauge steel so it’s also very durable. It has a cutting height of up to 5.5 inches.

The Ariens ZENITH E is a side discharge mower that was obviously very well-built – you just don’t get some of the more advanced features like touchscreen interface or automatic height adjusting.

The Ariens ZENITH E is really more about durability so if you’re looking for a rugged mower, this may be the one for you. The Ariens ZENITH E would also be a good choice if you have 4+ acres to mow.

Pros:

  • It was built to last
  • It runs very quietly
  • The tires are great on all kinds of terrain

Cons:

  • Doesn’t cut tough grass very cleanly

Overall Score: 93/100
